Tonight sex workers and supporters assembled at the statue of Eros in Piccadilly as part of an international day to end violence against sex workers. The candle lit vigil was joined by a demonstration by the Occupy Movement and a large contingent of police officers.

The Occupy demonstration played music, included dancing and, interestingly, a man dressed as a tent. It’s not clear that the Occupy protesters had intended to clash with the candle lit vigil.

The vigil, which was supported by trade unions, then marched through Soho to Congress House (the TUC headquarters) where there were speeches.

The protesters, who carried placards saying “There are no bad women, only bad laws” and “safety first” were in favor of the unionisation of sex workers because they believe collective organisation should give extremely vulnerable workers some protection.
