It seems that while many industries are struggling and the economic recovery is a slow train coming the environmentally friendly sector has continued to grow and provide jobs since the 2008 crash.
London’s green economy has grown by 13% since 2007/08, creating an extra 14,588 jobs and adding £1.3bn to London’s economy. Job creation has been particularly strong in alternative fuels and wave power. But the capital has been less strong in sectors that the Mayor is best placed to stimulate, including refurbishing buildings to be more energy efficient, biomass energy and waste management.
Green Assembly Member Jenny Jones commented, “There are green shoots, and they’re happening in the green economy. We could create tens of thousands of jobs with green measures if the Mayor put his money where his mouth is and really delivered on his promises.
“Just in the next few years alone there are more than a million homes and tens of thousands of office blocks waiting to be refurbished, hundreds of renewable energy networks generating more than Battersea Power Station with no plans to get them going, and eight major waste plants to deal with food waste still to be built.”
