London’s 26th New Year’s Day Parade took place on Sunday. It was the first official event in London’s 2012 Olympic year and Big Smoke roving reporter David Mentiply took himself down there.

According to the organisers, over 8,000 people performed, including more than 1,000 cheerleaders. Marching bands from the US provided lively music to welcome in the New Year. There were street dancers, floats, kites, ponies, circus acts, and performers from Afghanistan, France, China and 19 different London boroughs.

Half a million people watched the procession as it snaked around central London – from Piccadilly Circus, through to Trafalgar Square and then down Whitehall, ending at Parliament Square in front of Big Ben.
