Sustrans is a leading UK charity enabling people to travel by foot, bike or public transport for more of the journeys we make every day. They work with families, communities, policy-makers and partner organisations so that people are able to choose healthier, cleaner and cheaper journeys, with better places and spaces to move through and live in.

It’s time we all began making smarter travel choices.

Sustrans hopes that the upcoming mayoral and London Assembly elections will be used to showcase candidates’ commitments to a sustainable and equitable system of transport and planning as part of a wider desire to improve the quality of life of all Londoners.

The Sustrans manifesto aims to show the importance of transport policy in terms of the wide impact it can have on everyday life. Specifically, it calls for 6 key commitments which it thinks will be vital components of London’s transport approach beyond 2012 (all explained in more detail at the below link).

1. An increase in the mode share for cycle trips to 10% and for walking trips to 30% by 2020.

2. Default 20mph on streets where we live, work, shop and play.

3. A review of congestion charging to look at the potential for a more sophisticated model which extends beyond the central charging zone, to tackle congestion where it is most severe.

4. Increased funding for the development of London Greenways which enable new, nervous and inexperienced groups to get out on foot and by bike.

5. A commitment to making walking and cycling the norm for half of school journeys.

6. Take the cycling revolution to outer London where need and potential are greatest.
