Having attended last night’s excellent Bikes Alive event at King’s Cross we put this video together putting some of the case for tackling road safety in London.

This is a contribution to our #LondonManifesto where we hope to get ideas from across a range of Londoners on how to make our city cleaner, greener and fairer.

The organisations mentioned in this video are Bikes Alive, Living Streets and London Cycling Campaign. Please do consider getting involved with these, or other, campaigning groups.

  1. Great video Jim. Loved the blurry bit. Want to do one with me on abuse of advance stop lines (ASLs) by cars, motorbikes and HGVs and the danger this poses for cyclists AND for pedestrians? Yesterday the Islington Living Streets committee did a walk about at Angel and saw several HGVs stopped in ASLs so that the drivers could not see pedestrians crossing the road in front of their cabs. Two elderly women killed last year on ped crossings with lights on flashing greenman (ped light)/amber (vehicle light) when HGV drove forward oblivious to presence of slow moving older women still on the crossing.

    It was all deliberate :)

I shall have to work in an out of focus bit into all my future endeavors.

We shall have a chat about HGVs etc. happy to help.

Great stuff. Good to see at least one ‘Boris-biker’ getting involved too. Do you know when the next #bikesalive event is?

And pardon my ignorance, but what is the music?

Keep up the pressure well done! A couple of years ago I was cycling down Euston Road a coach overtook me dangerously close and clipped my handlebars i came off my bike and I was seriously injured. Sorry I dont want to frighten people but I avoid busy roads like this on my bike now and can only manage cycle routes and quiet roads so thanks for this good work

Dave: the music is a 1917 music hall piece – although I actually don’t know who the singer is :) The song is about travelling… I think. I was taking a bit of a risk with the music (was originally going to go with a safer drum machine based tune) but then I threw caution to the wind and went out on a limb…

Caroline: keep up with the bikes alive website is the best thing. We’ll promote the activities here at Big Smoke but do get it from the horse’s mouth too!

And there’s good news from Hackney – 20 mph limits on Council streets – http://www.hackney-cyclists.org.uk/20mph_press_release_14-4-8.htm. The Green party took the lead on this – it’s the natural home for those who want a big change in London transport.

  8. You’re so interesting! I don’t believe I’ve truly read
anything like that before. So good to find another person with some original thoughts on this subject.
Seriously.. many thanks for starting this up. This
website is one thing that is needed on the web, someone
    with a bit of originality!
