The Metropolitan Police Service have blocked an inquest into the death of Mark Duggan. The police were concerned that an inquest into their shooting of the unarmed 29 year old Tottenham man would reveal “sensitive information”.

The handling of the shooting last autumn directly led to wide spread rioting and the family have consistently raised concerns about the police version of events that led up to Duggan’s death. Duggan was killed as part of “Operation Trident” which has been critised for targeting the very people it was supposed to be protecting.

Mark Duggan’s aunt, Carole, said: “We believe the IPCC are withholding information from us which is delaying tactics. Maybe they think we will go away, come to terms with what has happened, but we are a grieving family and we will always grieve for Mark.”

If an inquest does take place it is unlikely to happen before January next year and would likely be held in closed session, without access to the public.

The police decision to block this inquest has raised concerns about their ability to remain objective about investigations that involve members of the force.
