Online petitions are a great way of making yourself as if you’ve done something without having to go through all that effort of actually doing anything. The downside is that they very rarely make any difference what so ever.

However, God bless the Coalition government, it’s now the case that if you sign a petition at the government approved website you can automatically trigger a Parliamentary debate if an MP is willing to take it up. This almost feels like it makes a difference and certainly pushed the two decades old campaign for justice over the Hillsborough disaster further forwards than it had gone in years in just the matter of weeks.

So what petitions are out there that right-on Big Smoke types might like to sign? Here’s a selection of the current ones, you never know you could help something happen if they get enough names;

  • No public funding for the Spurs redevelopment.

Tottenham Hotspurs is a commercial concern which receives many hundreds of £millions each year enabling its owners to purchase players for tens of £millions of pounds and pay them of £millions of pounds. None of this expenditure stays in the community. This is not a company short of money, assets or the ability to raise funds commercially…

There are many better uses for public money that does not include a rarely used stadium and associated infrastructure. Support public spending on health, housing, and education for the community in Tottenham not this needless and blind free gift to a commercial company. Here.

  • Thames Link Protest.

The petition of citizens of the United Kingdom declares that they are concerned about the future of the British train building industry. Their concern is a consequence of the decision to appoint Siemens as the preferred bidder for the new fleet of trains for the Thameslink Programme.

The petitioners therefore request that the House of Commons urges the Secretary of State for Transport to reverse / review this decision. This decision was made with no consideration given to the social & economic impact on the UK in awarding this contract overseas and must be assesed against this criteria. Here.

  • Stop HS2

We the undersigned believe that there is no business case for HS2, that there is no environmental case and at this time of cuts and austerity, there is clearly no money to pay for it.

We want the Government to scrap HS2 or at least call an independent public inquiry, which would mean the details are assessed properly. Here.

And just because we can…

  • Thatcher funeral to be privatised.

In keeping with the great lady’s legacy, Margaret Thatcher’s state funeral should be funded and managed by the private sector to offer the best value and choice for end users and other stakeholders.

The undersigned believe that the legacy of the former PM deserves nothing less and that offering this unique opportunity is an ideal way to cut government expense and further prove the merits of liberalised economics Baroness Thatcher spearheaded. Here.
