Environmental Sustainability Officer

Salary pa: up to £30,000 depending on experience

We are looking for an exceptional individual to help drive forward the green agenda for the Victoria BID.

 

The BID is championing a sustainable green agenda for the SW1 area and is looking to become the leader in the development of sustainable business environments through retrofitting of green and blue GI and managing the carbon footprint of businesses. We are working closely with public and private sector partners to achieve a positive change in the attitudes towards the environment as a whole but also drive the changes to the physical landscape in and around Victoria.  The increase in green and blue infrastructure will not only benefit the environment but also the workers, residents and visitors that come into Victoria on a daily basis and it is this which drives us.

We know that the next few years will be a challenge for all business. Therefore we need to be forward thinking and seize the opportunity to take more innovative steps and approaches to ensuring Victoria takes every opportunity to raise its profile.   Victoria is a gateway to London and we must we develop an area that creates a positive “first” impression.

 

JOB PROFILE

As an environmental/Sustainability officer, it would be your aim to manage and develop a range of projects that develop the green agenda within SW1.

Your work would typically involve:

  • Contributing to the planning and implementation of strategic and on the ground ‘blue and green infrastructure’ programmes  (such as green walls, rain gardens/SUD’s, green roof projects, trees etc.)
  • Developing a program of Public realm enhancements in conjunction with partners.
  • Developing research programs to monitor the impact of the GI projects undertaken by the BID but also to develop in conjunction with partners  new research schemes to raise the profile of the work the BID has undertaken and to generate new projects.
  • Managing an existing recycling scheme and a range of carbon reduction initiatives that fall under our ‘Green Business Network’ (which will involve the development of related seminars and training, and new project development).
  • Building sustainable partnerships with communities, business networks and local government.
  • To bid for local, national and European funding to bolster existing funds and deliver larger scale projects.
  • Advising local businesses on consultation documents from central and local government surrounding the policies on GI and related topics.
  • To commission consultants and contractors for the delivery of major projects and manage them effectively.
  • To work to established key performance indicators and targets, and to provide Board and Steering group reports on a quarterly basis.
  • To undertake such other duties commensurate with your position, and / or hours of work, as may reasonably be required.

 

Key skills required:

  • A Degree in a related area of study, or equivalent experience to meet the requirements of the post
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of environmental sustainability, carbon reduction, impact of climate change and adaptation in an urban setting, wildlife and biodiversity
  • Microsoft office skills (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to manage a budget and  experience of securing external funding
  • Report writing skills
  • People management, as you may be expected to manage Interns or students related projects
  • Ability to adapt flexibly to new priorities and additional tasks
  • The ability to work as part of a team, and on your own initiative, is essential, along with the skills to be flexible, multitask and work to demanding deadlines in a busy working environment.
  • Maintain and build effective relations with a wide range of stakeholders, including local business, external agencies, senior managers and internal colleagues
  • Exercise analysis and judgment to shape and drive improvements
  • Plan and prioritize work to manage conflicting tasks, meet delivery deadlines/ targets, review progress, with minimum supervision
  • Demonstrable experience in Sustainability management and strategy delivery
  • Experience of successfully delivering environmental sustainability projects and general project management experience
  • Experience of multi-agency partnership working.
