Richard Seymour has an excellent little history of May Day on Comment is Free where he looks at the roots of International Workers Day. Certainly in this country it’s not been marked recently by the kind of mass marches and insurrections that it has elsewhere, perhaps next year.
However, the issues it addresses are just as critical in London as anywhere else. The struggle for a decent living wage, for the rights of migrant workers to unionise, for the right to be safe at work – free from bullying, sexism or dangerous practices. In particular we should recognise that for the most exploited workers in the capital these rights are daily necessities rather than abstract principles.
While there are a number of events taking place round London today Big Smoke would like to wave a (virtual) red flag for all those who help organise in the work places and in their trade unions for the rights of those essential workers without whom this city would grind to a halt.
