Non-violence and sport.
Discussion and debate led off this monthby Jim Jepps (editor of Big Smoke)
Is sport usually just an excuse to indulge our most primitive tribalist instincts? Does the hysteria around many sports events bring out the worst in people?
Can sport be a progressive force to bring people together across boundaries? Does the possibility of sport being progressive and having positive aspects depend on whether or not we’re thinking of competitive team-based sports?
Are the Olympics an example of all that’s worst in sport? Is the fact that teams are “national” teams the main problem?
Are sports a way for the establishment to divert the mass of people from the necessity of struggling for social change?
