In Southwark’s Drummond road we have one of those walls that’s been painted by/for the community. I’m generally a fan of this sort of thing. It gives the feel of community and certainly beats pictures selling washing machines.

However, while taking a look yesterday it began to dawn on me that there was definitely a darker side to the painting.

First of all the first image you come to is a black, wet snake being grasped by the neck. Is this someone in fear of their life? Someone who is just really hungry? Or is it a sexual thing? Whatever the story it’s not the skipping children and historic scenes you get elsewhere.

There are, of course, a few innocuous images. There’s a robin at a bird box for example.

But what’s this? A street scene when a rabid vampire is lunging at an unsuspecting crowd. The two most ghoulish pearly King and Queen I’ve ever seen with black eyes and dead flesh.

A devil boxer, trapped in hell having to beat endless opponents to a pulp his soul is deadened and bleak. All he ever wanted was to learn to knit. Sad story.

Anyway, I’ll let you judge for yourselves, but there’s is something a little darker to this mural than your usual fare.

Drummond Road, beware the feral vampires

Being a pearly king or queen does not immunise you from the zombie virus

The soulless mechanical boxer will obliterate you

If you see a toxic poisonous snake, grab it!
