I’m beginning to think the Olympic flame is getting more press attention than the fires that were lighting up London’s boroughs in spring last year. Sadly it has gone out on the way here so that’s it, the Olympics are cancelled apparently. You heard it here first.

A spokeswoman for LOCOG said: “The flame went out due to a malfunctioning burner. It is not uncommon for a flame to go out and this can happen for a number of reasons, for example, in extreme winds. We keep the mother flame in specially designed miners’ lanterns so if the flame does go out for some reason on the relay we relight it from the source of the flame.”

So, things we learned today.

a) Flames can go out. Who knew?

b) One reason for a fire going out can be due to it being blown out. I thought only a fire extinguisher would do the job.

c) they use a Davy Lamp to keep the “mother flame” alive. Interesting.

d) if the flame goes out they, well, relight it rather than create a sarcastic list and post it on the internet.

Incidentally, what on Earth is Boris doing with these two unlit torches? Was he responsible for this whole debacle?
